We often hear in Thailand that there is a third hand or "invisible hand" in this fight. The more I study and watch, the more it becomes apparent that there are far more than three hands, and far more than one invisible hand. It is more like the invisible octopus, or octopi. And all those tentacles are entwined.
For instance, there are people who support "Thaksin" not because they support him personally but because he represents more closely their interests. As they see Thaksin weaken, they will move on. He carries no moral authority, and to Thailand's great credit, moral authority is very important here.
There are the farmers, the mafias, the various citizen groups, big business interests, and on and on. The only strongly uniting force is love for the King.
There is a massive amount under the surface here. Far more than just a "third" or "invisible" hand. This is an old and beautiful country with many currents flowing to many directions. If Thailand ever gets most of the flows going in generally the same direction, this country can be richer than Germany, and an Asian powerhouse with its own space program. Thailand is rich in many ways but that is not apparent.
Yet there is a warning. Old timer foreigners who have been here for decades will say: "Just when you think you understand Thailand, remember that you do not, because Thais do not understand it, either." Old timers warn me often, do not think you really understand Thailand, because you do not and it is possible that you never will.
